Steve fixed our camera, and I found a few cute ones here to post of Ross. We are heading off on Friday to Ontario, for a week at the Gibson's Cottage in Port Elgin. The kids and I will fly back a week later than Steve, so I'll also fit in some visiting with my sister, and friends from university.
Ross has an incredibly long attention span for a 19 month old, and will often sit and look at books for a long time, either by himself or with us. One of his absolute favourite books is our Lonely Planet California Guide book. For some reason, he just loves flipping through the pages and stares and stares at pictures and maps alike.
Both kids have had a lot of fun with this box we got with a new car seat, but it's not quite big enough for both of them, which of course led to some tears.
And here is Steve's pride and joy these days... the garage! He spends a bit of time most evenings in the garage, and has put a lot of work into getting it set up and refurbishing an old table saw and drill press. The kids also love being out there with him, whether using tools, putting dolls in buggies, or spreading sawdust all over the floor.

Merry Go Rounds
Madeleine really loves Merry Go Rounds right now, mostly thanks to a CD we listen to in the car that features a song about one. So when I heard about an old restored carousel in San Francisco that was having a free-ride day, I immediately thought of M. She couldn't get enough, and must have ridden it at least six times in a row.
She loves singing and sometimes makes up songs, and other times rotates between her current favourites: Eensy Weeny Spider, ABCs, Twinkle Twinkle, and Mary Had A Little Lamb. Sometimes the Wheels on the Bus makes it in there too. She is also really into talking about all the things she will do "when she grows bigger"... anything she is either not allowed to do now (like use a sharp knife or touch a pan on the stove) she says "I can do that when I grow bigger". It also comes up when she sees exciting things like a crane, digger, airplane, car... all of which she is planning on driving when she grows bigger. In the nearer future, she is excited about going to school when she is five, and often packs up her backpack with things to bring to school. She doesn't have a nap anymore, and is usually asleep around 8pm, but she does not like going to lie in her bed if Ross is still awake. He often lies in his crib talking to himself for a long time, and she will say "I don't want Ross to talk to me!" which of course, makes him talk more. Oh, I can so clearly remember intentionally doing the exact opposite of what my big sister wanted of me.
Ross rode the Merry Go Round as well, but he was less enthusiastic and had had enough after two rides.
There is a pretty severe drought in California right now, but that was not the reason for Ross' sink bath. We sometimes do a "foot bath" as an alternative to a big tub bath, but Ross was not content with just his feet in the sink. He has started using some new sounds and is getting closer to having real words. He says "uh oh" and "all done" and "mama/dada" somewhat consistently. One of the bonuses of him wanting to do everything Madeleine does, is that he's shown some interest in using the potty lately, so every now and then if I set him on it, he'll actually go. Most of the time he just likes to pretend he's gone so he can flush and move the lid up and down a hundred times. He takes one nap midday, anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours, and is in his crib pretty consistently from 7pm - 6:30am. He is still nursing too, but usually only once when he wakes up from his nap.Our camera has been broken for the last couple of months, so our pictures have been lacking, and while we wait for the replacement part we've been using our old point and shoot. And also, it feels like the everyday events of life here are much less blog-worthy than they were in NZ!
It is certainly wonderful to have Steve be finished the PhD and not have to bring any work home with him. Madeleine always looks forward to the weekends when Daddy doesn't have to go to work. He loves having all his tools set up in the garage and the kids love helping him out there. We've even started a weekly cleaning night where we each pitch in - something that I could never expect while the thesis was hanging over us.
My day-to-day with the kids consists of visits to parks, gardens, grocery stores, and occasionally something more like the steam train, merry-go-round, or a beach. They're still young enough that we can also pretty easily fill a day at home with books, blocks, trains, monster-chasing, and skyping.

Grammie and Grandpa Visit
Steve was off to a conference in Montreal for a week in June, so my parents came down for a visit and to help out. Madeleine was very excited to take them on the little steam train in a nearby park.
Ross had been on it once before, but it was still a bit overwhelming for him, and it wasn't until the final turn that he started smiling and making "chug-chug" noises.Another outing was to a local botanic garden, where the kids had lots of fun playing in a grove of Redwoods.
Madeleine has started taking pictures, and this one was thanks to her! She absolutely loves having the camera and it is fun to see what she thinks is picture-worthy around the house.
Pretending that a Redwood stump is a train...
Ross really likes sitting at the piano and playing, and sometimes even hums or sings along. Lately he has also been really excited for Steve to play the guitar - maybe we have a future musician in our midst!
Both kids love books, but Ross especially, will ask (by grunting and pointing) to sit and read books many times a day. Madeleine is practicing her typing here, and not surprisingly, she's already figured out a few things on our laptop that we (or at least, I) didn't know.
We celebrated our first Independence Day this past weekend, by taking the kids to the local park where there was a big festival all day. It was overwhelming for all of us - rides, music, crowds, $5 hot dogs - but I think the kids had fun seeing everything and they loved the little flags.

Point Reyes
For Mother's Day this year we drove 1.5 hours to Point Reyes, hoping to visit the lighthouse there. Unfortunately, high winds caused them to close the steps down to the lighthouse, but we still had some magnificent views.
Ross and I braving the high winds...
The lighthouse was down a few hundred steps - with big rails and locked gates - a stark contrast to similar lighthouses in NZ with hardly a wooden railing on one side.Looking north at beautiful beaches far too windy to actually visit. M could hardly walk in the wind, it was so strong.
After the lighthouse we stopped at nearby Drake Beach for a picnic and play on the long expanse of open beach (not the one pictured above).
It was still really, really windy, but the kids had so much fun playing we ended up staying a few hours.
Madeleine was off in her own world, running, dancing, and singing to herself, as well as rolling in the sand like it was snow!
Ross stuck closer to us since he had a bit more trouble staying upright in the wind, but he too, had fun exploring the sand and little tidal pools.

Time in BC
The kids and I spent two weeks in Abbotsford at the end of April, and while I spent a lot of time with my grandpa in Bellingham WA, my dad got to do a hefty chunk of child-minding... the kids loved it and they had a lot of fun together... eating ice cream...
helping make coffee in the morning...taking portraits on windowsills...
playing with pens in bed (that mommy left within reach - oops!)...
going to work in the house/office that Grandpa built for them...
doing some cooking...
picking flowers...
trying out the new swing in the front yard...
climbing ladders...
driving cars...
and sleeping over lunch.
We had beautiful weather and it was fun to see how much the kids enjoyed their time.
Kristin's dog, Polly, was there the whole time, and both kids adore her - she was very tolerant of them taking her for walks (in the house), chasing her, and constantly wanting cuddles.
Another highlight was getting to ride horses at an old family friend's farm. Both kids gave it a try and M didn't want it to end, and neither did I!
They loved watching Wall-E with Great Uncle Gary in the mornings... a very serious event, indeed.
And here is M wearing one of our childhood dresses, made by my Grandma Hoffmann. Being there for so long and knowing our trip home was only a couple of hours was such a delight - it has definitely made the big move from NZ feel worthwhile.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Madeleine!
Celebrating Madeleine's birthday this year was fun because she was so excited for it. She started off the day with one present - some stamps from us.
My sister was here and we all went to Fairyland for the afternoon. Fairyland is a lovely little storybook park in Oakland with beautiful trees, flowers, a little train, puppet show, and animals.
After her favourite dinner of lemon tuna pasta salad, we had a "3" lemon cake, which she had helped me decorate, and she got to open the rest of her presents.Ross was thrilled that he had a present sent from NZ as well - and Miss 3 showed him his new book with all the authority and wisdom that she inherently has as a big sister.
Madeleine was happy with her new balance bike, but the torch and scissors she got definitely won out in terms of time spent with them.
I remember wondering what she would be like at this age... and here we are, with a big 3 year old girl who makes us smile each day. She is imaginative and organized, goofy and shy, curious and all-knowing. She loves mothering her dolls (and Ross), playing ball, riding her scooter, cleaning things, drawing, and climbing. She has no fear of heights, but doesn't like wobbly things. She couldn't care less about princesses, but does like hearts, animals, diggers, and cement mixers. She makes up songs about what she's doing, and dances when no one is looking. How exciting it will be to see how she changes over the next year!
